Some people get confused by the term "enriched". It implies that it contains added benefits when in reality it may not. Here is a definition of "enriched" taken from Ruth Yaron's Super Baby Food book...
| Quote: | | "There is an enourmous nutritional difference between whole grains and the enriched, processed grains used in most of America's food products. The word "enriched" means that more than a dozen natural nutrients have been destroyed during processing and a few synthetic ones (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, iron, and maybe calcium) have been replaced in unnatural proportions. (Enriched is different from "fortified", which indicates that nutrients have been added that were never there in the first place.)" |
Be sure to look for the term enriched when reading lables of bread and pastas and try to buy ones that say "whole wheat" as opposed to "enriched". |
